Occupations: Shipping agent for an oil company in Australia. Then I enrolled at uni to read political science, but I switched to journalism.
I have been a soldier, joining the Royal Hampshire Regiment, but later I requested transfers to the Intelligence Corps and the Education Corps.
For most of my life I have been an investigative journalist.
Hobbies: Sailing fast multi-hulls.

I spent the war in a Japanese prison camp, from the age of 8. It was the one featured in the Steven Spielberg film Empire of the Sun. After the war the police told us the Union Jack Club in town had been converted into a gas chamber. If one more atom bomb had been dropped on Japan, we would have been gassed.
